White Stripes-Under Great White Northern Lights (Live)

Since hearing the news of a cancelled tour in September 2007 many White Stripes fans have yearned for more from this mega-duo. The cancellation was due to Meg White acute anxiety, which makes me wonder if this band will ever record another album again. Being a mild fan of the Stripes I’ve got say this maybe was not the best tour to record. The whole set seems a little off and the product quality certainly is mediocre. To recant a bit I feel it is very important to inform my readers that have never seen this band live so therefore my thoughts are clearly based on the sole listening experience of this live record. I find hard to understand that Jack & Meg heard this and  said “ok it sounds great let’s run with it.” Again I do like this band, they are not my favorite band of all time, but even if they were I would not hold back. I am one who enjoys the raw elements of music, but dare I say that “Under Great White Northern Lights” feels and sounds like a bootleg. (more…)

Jack White switches musical gears with the Dead Weather

Saturday, July 18th, 2009 by Jeff Niesel

You gotta admit Jack White never wears out his welcome. Right as the White Stripes’ garage blues was catching on, he switched musical gears to put out an eloquent country album with Loretta Lynn. Then, he threw himself into the neo-garage Raconteurs, sharing front man duties with Brendan Benson, playing second fiddle even though he’s clearly the superior guitarist and more charismatic singer. Now, with Dead Weather, which has just issued its debut, Horehound, he’s changed his tack again.

Michel Gondry releases new video collection

Monday, April 20th, 2009 by Jeff Niesel

A pixilated dog that you can make walk to different icons to play different videos, even the menu on this music video collection from director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind) is a work of art unto itself. The collection, the follow-up to 2003’s terrific Gondry music video compilation, doesn’t disappoint either. Now that MTV is devoted to bad reality shows, music videos aren’t produced with the same regularity. That hasn’t stopped Gondry, however. As this set makes clear, he’s been as active as ever in delivering a wide ranging of wildly bizarre videos.
