“How come nobody’s ever tried to be a superhero?” When Dave Lizewski, an ordinary New York teenager, dons a green and yellow internet-bought wetsuit to become the no- nonsense vigilante Kick-Ass, he soon finds an answer to his own question:  because it hurts. But, overcoming all the odds, the overly eager Dave quickly becomes a phenomenon, capturing the imagination of the public. However, he’s not the only superhero out there – the fearless and highly-trained father/daughter crime-fighting duo Big Daddy and Hit Girl have been slowly but surely taking down the criminal empire of local Mafioso Frank D’Amico. As Kick-Ass gets drawn into their no-holds-barred world of bullets and bloodletting with Frank’s son, Chris, now reborn as Kick-Ass’ arch-nemesis Red Mist, the stage is set for a final showdown between the forces of good and evil in which the DIY hero will have to live up to his name. Or die trying…

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 by Andy Argyrakis

Summer festival season is about to hit full swing and all eyes will certainly center on Chicago come Lollapalooza 2009 (hitting Grant Park August 7-9). Though the line-up has yet to be annouced, last year’s trifecta of headliners included Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine and Kanye West, which means there won’t likely be a shortage of major players throughout the upcoming installment. While fans wait with baited breath to find out who will fill in those very slots, a contest has popped up on these very pages worth getting even more excited about. (more…)

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 by Andy Argyrakis

This very website regularly offers a slew of autographed CDs, instruments and posters from musicians and celebrities, though with Black History Month right around the corner, there’s an even more exciting prize prospect, coupled with some socially conscious dialogue. Long story short, you could win a Sony PS3 by submitting an essay that tackles the following topic: “How has the political and social environment affected the music of certain eras, and how does this directly or indirectly influence you?” (more…)

Cash Cash issues new album digitally

The new Cash Cash album, Take it to the Floor, doesn’t hit retail until Jan. 20, but the disc is currently available for digital download (through all the usual outlets). The synth-pop-punk band out of New Jersey has gotten noticed recently for “Party in Your Bedroom,” a catchy tune that has an ’80s retro vibe to it, thanks in part to the use of vocoder vocals and old school synths. The band even launched a make-your-own video contest for the song, with the winners taking home a $500 Bed, Bath and Beyond gift certificate. The conest concluded earlier this month, yielding a decidedly amateurish clip in which a group of teens dance and scream in their bedroom until their parents wake up and (surprise!) decide to join them. The video’s a bit goofy but so is the infectious tune. The rest of Take it to the Floor features everything from the emo ballad “Breakout” to the frisky “Cash Cash,” which recalls the madcap ’80s act Oingo Boingo. Look for the band on tour in late January and throughout February as it’s teamed up with the Millionaires and I Set Your Friends on Fire for a winter jaunt.
