Third Man Records issues new set of singles

I picked up the latest round of Jack White-produced 7-inch vinyl singles that are available on Third Man Records, the label run by the White Stripes/Dead Weather/Raconteurs front man. White produced all three singles and recorded them at his Third Man Studios, located in a Nashville storefront complex he’s recently taken over. “Fly Farm Blues” is a self-produced White solo effort. Culled from the It Might Get Loud documentary in which White appears, it’s a raw, noisy number that finds White busting out an old school blues tune he wrote and recorded straight to two-track. I like the song alright, though it’s pretty harsh-sounding. And there’s nothing on the b-side, which is a bit of a disappointment.

Then, there’s the Transit single “C’mon and Ride.” The group is made up of Nashville Metro Authority members but these are no amateurs. They harmonize nicely on “C’mon and Ride,” a mellow, jazzy number that serves as an ad of sorts for the MTA. This is the one dud in the bunch. I like the b-side, “Afterparty,” better as they channel P-Funk/Parliament, boasting “Ain’t no party like a Transit afterparty” while playing up the funk side of their sound. It’s good stuff.

And finally, there’s Dan Sartain’s “Bohemian Grove,” which White also produced. He’s been described as “the no-wave Johnny Cash,” but his voice isn’t nearly as deep and bellowing. Still, both “Bohemian Grove” and the b-side “Atheist Funeral” have a great vibe. “Bohemian Grove” is a sparse number that comes across as a ‘60s tune you might find on the Nuggest box set. “Atheist Funeral” is equally groovy as it finds Sartain beckoning “c’mon to my atheist funeral” to a sparse backbeat punctuated by some brittle guitar work.

All three singles are available through thirdmanrecords.com and at independent record stores everywhere.
