“Moon” DVD somewhat short on suspense, but still serves up a hearty dose of reflection

Sunday, February 28th, 2010 by Campus Correspondent

Even though Moon features a minimalist principal cast of two characters (one of whom is just a voice), this film manages to captivate viewers and make them question notions of identity and loss. Sam Rockwell expertly plays astronaut Sam Bell, who is nearing the end of a three-year contract to be aboard a ship on the moon that harvests energy from the sun and sends it back to Earth. With only two weeks to go, he starts seeing things—and eventually is forced to question even the most basic aspects about himself as a human being. (more…)

Where is M.Ward?

Actress Zooey Deschanel and musician M. Ward, who together make the band She & Him, will be releasing their sophomore album, Volume Two, on March 23, 2010. A few days ago, they released their first single, “In The Sun,” on iTunes. Upon listening to it, I realized that something was missing: M. Ward. Not once on the entire track does he sing, and quite frankly, I think that is completely unacceptable. (more…)

Lupe Fiasco Plans Steppin Lasers Tour

Friday, February 26th, 2010 by News Release

Lupe Fiasco Plans Steppin Lasers Tour

The last time the verbose, conceptually silly Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco embarked on a tour with a nutso poster and a name that signified light-show glory, he was opening on Kanye West’s Glow in the Dark tour, and it was awesome. This time, Lupe’s headlining his own trek, and he’s calling it the Steppin Laser tour. That moniker is presumably a reference to forthcoming LP We Are Lasers, but if Lupe wants to add in some Kanye-level stagecraft insanity, I wouldn’t be mad. The poster (above) promises good things.

On the tour, Lupe’s like-minded Atlanta labelmate B.o.B. will open most dates, which means you’ll get two ambitious and quick-talking rappers for the price of one. And since Playboy Tre tends to play hypeman at B.o.B. shows, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll see him, too.

Before the tour comes to the U.S., though, Lupe has to finish the Australia/New Zealand leg, which he’s doing now. When the tour came to NZ earlier in the month, Lupe told New Zealand’s 3 News (via MTV) that the tour marks the first time he’s performed tracks from We Are Lasers, so expect new jams. He also says that the album should arrive soon: “It’s on Atlantic Records, so they have it. It’s finished. I’m just waiting for them to give me a release date and put it out.” And he claims to be working on a novel.

Jonathan Demme’s Neil Young Film Comes to Theaters, DVD

Friday, February 26th, 2010 by News Release

The Silence of the Lambs/Rachel Getting Married director Jonathan Demme is an old hand at filming Neil Young, filming live shows, and filming Neil Young live shows. Demme previously directed Young’s 2006 concert film Heart of Gold, as well as the non-Neil concert docs Stop Making Sense (Talking Heads) and Storefront Hitchcock (Robyn Hitchcock). He also got TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe to sing Young’s “Unknown Legend” in Rachel Getting Married. The man knows what he’s doing, so the news that he’s directed another Neil Young concert film is welcome indeed.

On March 19, Young’s movie Neil Young Trunk Show will open at a few theaters across the country, where it’ll run for a week, and Reprise will release it on DVD and Blu-ray later in the year. Demme filmed Young playing two shows at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania when he was on his 2007 Chrome Dreams II tour. In the movie, he plays both electric and acoustic songs, and the set list includes “Mexico”, “Kansas”, “The Sultan”, “Cinnamon Girl”, “Cowgirl in the Sand”, “After the Gold Rush”, “The Believer”, and a 20-minute version of “No Hidden Path”.

Friday, February 26th, 2010 by News Release

Stone Temple Pilots’ first album in nine years will be released on May 25th, the reunited rockers announced today on their official Website. The album, which debuted this week at a listening party at New York’s Rose Bar, will boast 12 tracks and a pretty unforgettable title: Stone Temple Pilots. As Rolling Stone previously reported, STP canceled their final concerts of 2009 in order to finish the Don Was-produced LP, their first since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da.

Check out photos of Scott Weiland onstage and backstage in Austin.

In our Spring Album Preview in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone (on sale Wednesday, March 3rd), we take a closer look at Stone Temple Pilots, on which Scott Weiland’s lyrics touch on his divorce and his brother’s death and guitarist Dean DiLeo lays down psychedelic and heavy blues riffs. “Dean really stepped up. His playing is amazing,” Weiland tells RS. The album includes gospel-rocking closer “Maver” and the Seventies-tinged “Huckleberry Crumble.” You can check out the entire Stone Temple Pilots track list below.

With the arrival of the new album comes a new Stone Temple Pilots tour, and Weiland and company will kick off the festivities with a showcase at this year’s SXSW Festival. Full dates after the jump.

Unearthed Rolling Stones Tracks Set to Debut on Exile on Main Street Reissue

Friday, February 26th, 2010 by News Release

Photo: AFP/Getty
The Rolling Stones’ classic Exile on Main Street — one of Rolling Stone’s highest-ranking Greatest Albums of All Time — is returning as a very special reissue. On May 18th, Universal Music Group is re-releasing the album with 10 never-before-heard tracks, including “Plundered My Soul,” “Dancing in the Light,” “Following the River” and “Pass the Wine,” that were produced by Jimmy Miller, the Glimmer Twins and Don Was. The disc also features alternate versions of “Soul Survivor” and “Loving Cup.”

Mick Jagger tells Rolling Stone when the record company asked him to dive in his files for possible bonus songs, he initially believed the band had used all they’d written on the 1972 double album (read RS’s original review). “I went back in the archives and dug out a load of things,” he says. “I added some percussion and some vocals. Keith put guitar on one or two.” Jagger wrote fresh lyrics for “Following the River,” but other than some light revisions to the other songs, “I really wanted to leave them pretty much as they were,” Keith Richards says. “I didn’t want to interfere with the Bible, you know. They still had that great basement sound.”

The intimate Rolling Stones: photos from the band’s 1969 tour.

A deluxe edition of the reissue will also include Stones in Exile, a documentary directed by Stephen Kijak that tracks the making of Exile, along with footage from Cocksucker Blues and Ladies and Gentlemen… the Rolling Stones. After seeing the Exile film for the first time recently, Richards says, “I must not have noticed all the cameramen while I was making the record. I was amazed at how much footage they actually found.”

The Exile on Main Street reissue will be sold a CD featuring the original 18 tracks or as a deluxe CD edition with the 10 bonus tracks. The super deluxe package includes vinyl, the 30-minute documentary DVD and a 50-page collector’s book with photos from the Exile era.

For much more news on the Rolling Stones’ Exile reissue, check out the next issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands Wednesday, March 3rd

Sublime Settles on New Band Name, Plots Tour

Friday, February 26th, 2010 by News Release

With three gigs under its belt and the controversy over its name settled, Sublime With Rome — the new incarnation of Sublime — will hit the road this spring and summer.

The trio, which features the founding rhythm section of drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson with singer-guitarist Rome Ramirez, kicks things off April 20 at the Palladium in Los Angeles. Six of what Gaugh tells Billboard.com will be about a dozen North American dates have been announced, while the group will play some European dates in May and return home for a full-scale summer tour, starting in late May or early June.

Pre-sales for the tour — which marks Gaugh and Wilson’s first foray under the Sublime name in 14 years, since the death of Bradley Nowell — begin March 2. The Dirty Heads, whose single, “Lay Me Down,” was co-written by Rome, will open.

“I can’t wait to get this show on the road,” Gaugh says. “Rome has got a great personality and a good vibe, and he’s really humble and a real fun person to be around — and a great musician. Once we got things together and things were working out good, we were like, ‘Alright, yeah! Let’s go!’ ”

There was a legal stumbling block in getting the group off the ground, though. After Gaugh, Wilson and Rome played a couple of shows — including Cypress Hill’s Smokeout Festival in October — as Sublime, Nowell’s family and estate sued and was granted an injunction against them using the name. But all parties have since agreed to the Sublime with Rome moniker, and the group has established a separate Web site, sublimewithrome.com.

And, Gaugh says, there are no hard feelings.

“It was never really an issue of ‘You can’t’ or ‘We won’t let you’ or ‘We’re gonna, no matter what you say,’ ” Gaugh explains. “It was more, ‘How is this gonna be done? How are we gonna put it together respectfully and…represent the old and the new.”

Gaugh says Sublime with Rome will definitely generate new music. The trio wrote three new songs when it first started playing together in February of 2009 — including one, “Panic,” that it’s performed at all three shows it’s done so far. “We’re gonna continue working on material as we’re on the road,” the drummer says. “It’s not without question to have a studio in one of the buses while we’re on tour. We do a lot of our best creativity on stage, so we’ll be trying out new stuff for the fans, even before we go into the studio.”

Here are Sublime with Rome’s announced tour dates so far:

Apr. 20: Los Angeles, Calif. (The Palladium)

Apr. 23: Oakland, Calif. (Fox Theatre)

Apr. 26: Denver, Col. (The Fillmore)

Apr. 28: Chicago, Ill. (The Riviera Theatre)

May 1: New York, N.Y. (Roseland Ballroom)

May 5: Philadelphia, Pa. (Electric Factory)
