A hi res jpeg of The Horse’s Ha is available for download here: http://pitchperfectpr.com/images/hires/HHbyJamesElkington.jpg.
“The Horse’s Ha’s debut album, Of The Cathmawr Yards, blends Elkington and Bean’s voices and sensibilities together seamlessly on a set of songs that relies heavily on intricate acoustic guitar plucking, dreamy violin, and a gently melancholy air. . . on songs like ‘Liberation’ and ‘The Piss Choir,’ the percussion taps away madly while Elkington and Bean harmonize like a ’60s sunshine-pop group dosed on downers. The effect is unique and striking, like a bumpy ride through a moonlit country night.” – Noel Murray, The Onion’s A.V. Club (A-)

“The songs are moody and cryptic, full of death and moonlight. And with Elkington’s deep, resonant voice intertwined with Bean’s high, thin one, and his acoustic finger-picking interlaced with Lonberg- Holm’s sinuous cello, their mystery is enchanting. It’s an eerie and nuanced album, with echoes of Smog, the Mark Lanegan / Isobel Campbell collaborations, and British folk legends Pentangle and John Martyn.” — Steve Klinge, Philadelphia Inquirer

“This is a very weird album, and an ultimately compelling one. . . Horse’s Ha, which is really Freakwater’s Janet Bean and the Zincs’ Jim Elkington with a postmodern jazz trio behind them, sure sounds British, a bit like Pentangle on cough syrup. Elkington’s songs have purposefully literary lyrics which on more than a few occasions wander off into a kind of slightly darker version of Donovan-land, but it’s the pacing here that draws the ear, with Elkington and Bean’s well-defined, tense and sultry vocal harmonies working over languidly flowing rhythms . . .” – Steve Leggett, All Music (4 Stars)

John Butler announces new album and line-up

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 by Jeff Niesel

John Butler is proud to announce the new line up to the ever-evolving John Butler Trio. Australian musician Nicky Bomba will feature as the new drummer and percussionist. Nicky has been a prominent member of the Melbourne music scene with his band Bomba and is a prolific songwriter, performer and producer in his own right. Nicky was also the principle drummer on JBT’s five times platinum album ‘Sunrise Over Sea’.

Sydney musician Byron Luiters will feature as the new bass player. Byron is a talented dynamic bassist who has been a member of the Sydney outfit Ray Mann Three.

John, Nicky and Byron commenced recording of the new studio album in early June and are thrilled with progress so far.

John Butler said today, “Over the last twelve years of the JBT, I have been blessed with some amazing individuals. All have left their legacy and have raised the musical bar of the band. With any new incarnation it has always been an honor and challenge to meet the benchmark the band has achieved artistically and take it to the next level. It’s great to be playing with Nicky again and Byron brings a whole new level of melody, funk and Mojo to the Trio. Very exciting times.”

On July 2nd John departs Australian shores for a solo overseas tour starting in the Northern Hemisphere. He has been invited to play, for the first time, at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival. He will also play at the Rothbury Music festival in Michigan alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, The Black Crowes and Ani Di Franco, and The Mile High Festival in Denver. In North America he has sold out headline shows in Toronto and LA. In Europe John is playing at the most famous music hall in Paris, the Folies Bergere and in London at the Union Chapel , a stunning old converted church situated in Islington. This show sold out within 24 hours of going on sale. He also plays Cannes, Amsterdam and Antwerp.

John will return from his overseas trip at the beginning of August, just in time to take part in the Cannot Buy My Soul Concert which is part of the Queensland Music Festival and takes place at the magnificent Brisbane River Stage on Saturday August 1st. It will be a very special evening with a long list of talented local musicians taking to the stage to reinterpret the wonderful catalogue of Kev Carmody, John will perform alongside the likes of Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins and Bernard Fanning.

Daughtry embarks on warm-up tour

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 by News Release

Daughtry will embark upon a short club tour this August, starting just weeks after the release of LEAVE THIS TOWN (19 Recordings/RCA Music Group), the follow-up to the band’s Grammy-nominated and quintuple-platinum debut.

Singer Chris Daughtry, bassist Josh Paul, drummer Joey Barnes, and guitarists Brian Craddock and Josh Steely will use the intimate shows to perform many of the songs from the new album on stage for the first time. The 13-date tour will kick off August 2 in Orlando, FL and end August 22 in Las Vegas, NV.  Tickets go on sale July 11. Daughtry will offer limited VIP packages as a pre-sale July 8th – 10th. Additionally, the band will also give a free ticket to the first 50 fans in each market who pre-order LEAVE THIS TOWN from www.DaughtryOfficial.com.

“This club tour is a thank you to our loyal fans. Its a great way for them to see us up close and, more importantly, at a cheap price,” says singer Chris Daughtry

More than a month before its official release, LEAVE THIS TOWN is already generating considerable buzz for its musical range.

Rolling Stone: “The surprisingly diverse results include everything from the clubby ‘Supernatural’ to the fiddle-driven Vince Gill duet ‘Tennessee Line.’” …”’Call Your Name’ [is] an anthem reminiscent of ‘November Rain,’ complete with a stirring key change, falsetto vocal runs and an explosive Slash-style guitar climax.”

Billboard: “And while Daughtry’s voice and rock riffs still play center stage to most of the album’s tracks, several songs take some creative chances. Daughtry wrote “You Don’t Belong” on his own; it’s a hard-driving song that wouldn’t sound out of place on an Alice in Chains album.”

Daughtry will begin an extensive North American tour this fall.

Jackson’s vinyl record sells for $33,750

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 by Matt Earley

MICHAEL Jackson memorabilia auctioned off the day after his death fetched $205,000, exceeding original estimates of $10,000 to $12,000.

The auction, planned before the pop star’s June 25 death, included a sheer, long-sleeve shirt worn on his 1984 “Victory” tour and a handwritten letter, according to an e- mail from Darren Julien, chief executive of West Hollywood, California-based Julien’s Auctions.

A copy of a Motown Records LP (long-playing record) produced to coincide with the Jackson 5’s September 1971 “Goin’ Back to Indiana” prime-time ABC-TV special sold for $33,750, compared with Julien’s estimate of $400 to $600. It is signed in black permanent pen by Tito, Marlon, Jackie, Michael, and Jermaine Jackson, who are all featured on the cover, the auctioneer said.

The album also includes the signature of Randy Jackson, who officially joined the band when he replaced Jermaine in the 1970s, Julien’s said.

The prices underscore the heightened interest in Jackson’s music and memorabilia following his death from a suspected cardiac arrest in Los Angeles. Albums featuring Jackson, who died at age 50, occupied the top 14 rankings for best-selling music at Amazon.com Inc., according to the Seattle-based retailer’s Web site.

“Michael was highly collectible in the first place,” Julien said in an interview.

“We actually contemplated pulling the lots after his death. We didn’t want anyone to think we were taking advantage of the situation, but a fan told us, we need to celebrate Michael’s life.”

The custom long-sleeve shirt was expected to sell for $1,000 to $1,500 and went for $52,500, Julien’s said.

It has a white spandex lining and is completely covered in small pearls on one side and a combination of pearls and Swarovski crystal on the other. It was created by designer Bill Whitten and was once part of the collection of David Gest, former husband of Liza Minnelli, according to the auction house.

The handwritten letter had a pre-sale estimate of $200 to $300 and sold for $12,500, the company said. Bloomberg

The top ten Michael Jackson songs of all time!

Monday, June 29th, 2009 by Andy Argyrakis

With a career that’s spanned 750 million worldwide sales and for someone who’s shattered virtually all the major music industry records, it’s next to impossible to narrow down the top tunes in Michael Jackson’s lauded arsenal. Add in his work with The Jackson 5, plus collaborations with other artists (like the all-star project “We Are the World”) and the task is practically insurmountable. Nonetheless, here’s a stab at his solo years, ranging from early album Off the Wall through international blockbusters like Thriller and Bad, plus even a tune from Dangerous. (more…)
