A New Air Guitar Champ is Crowned

The Olympics might have sucked up most of the media coverage for the past two weeks, but I just got a press release announcing that San Francisco native Craig Billmeier (also known as Hot Lixx Hulahan) won the Air Guitar World Championships held recently in Oulu, Finland.

I’m not usually one to fall for record label marketing schemes of repackaging a project with a previously unreleased bonus track or just picking up a title I already bought once just because the sound is remastered. But I’ve gotta admit being taken in by the recent barrage of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers buzz, from the Super Bowl half time show through catching the band in concert this summer.

Kings of Leon Coming On Strong

Talked to Caleb Followill, the lead singer of the Kings of Leon today, for the October issue’s cover story. He phoned in from his Tennessee home, where he had just returned from playing summer festivals in the UK, where the band is fricking huge.

what’s with the C+ on the Hold Steady?

The Hold Steady’s latest, Stay Positive, isn’t as good as 2006′s Boys and Girls in America, but it is close.  “Sequestered in Memphis” is great arena rock, while J. Macsis’ banjo give “Two Crosses” the desolutory urgency reminiscent of Springsteen’s The Rising CD.  And the three song bonus closer on the CD may be the best work on the collection.   A C+, Hearsay?  C’mon.
